Motorcycle Riding Tips: Riding With a Child
Looking to take your child on their first-ever motorcycle ride? Before you have them hop in the passenger seat, be sure to read over our important tips below. We’ve listed a number of important safety accessories, as well as some helpful riding advice, to ensure your child is safe and sound during their very first open-air ride.
Accessories
The first thing you’ll want to do is purchase a helmet for your child to wear while riding on your motorcycle. Make sure the helmet is D.O.T. approved, and we recommend looking for a model that provides some form of eye protection. Because your child won’t have much riding stamina, we also recommend investing in a few items that may make riding a bit easier—such as a helpful handle strap or riding harness.
Prep
This is likely your child’s first time riding a motorcycle, and you’ll need to explain riding dos and don’ts to them very carefully. Make sure they know to hang on tight—especially during turns—not to lean or reach for stray objects while riding a motorcycle, and to keep their hands and feet in the designated areas while on the bike. Warn them that a motorcycle can be very loud and that some parts of it may be hot to the touch. Finally, set up a signal so your child can tell you if they need you to pull over for any reason or make an emergency stop.
