While no one expects to have to jump-start their motorcycle, accidents can happen, and it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry. To learn what tools you need and how to set up a jump-start for your motorcycle, check out our article below.

Tools You Need

To successfully jump-start your motorcycle, you’ll first need a set of jumper cables. However, for your safety, we strongly recommend having a set of gloves and a flashlight on hand as well. If you’re traveling out of town, it may also be wise to invest in a portable jump-starter just in case an emergency arises.

Setting Up the Jump

To set up your jump-start, you’ll need to begin with both vehicles—or your portable jump starter—turned off. Once your gloves are on, grab your red jumper cable and attach it to the positive pole of each vehicle’s battery. Attach the black cable to a grounded piece of metal on your motorcycle, such as the frame or chassis, and the negative battery pole of the other vehicle.

If you’re jumping your motorcycle with a 12-volt car battery, do not turn the vehicle on. After a minute or two, check to see if your motorcycle will start, then disconnect the cables in the reverse order you attached them. If you’re using another motorcycle battery, turn on the vehicle with the good battery and allow it to run for a few minutes. Try to start your vehicle, and if it starts successfully, be sure to ride it around for at least 30 minutes to ensure the battery reaches full charge.

After your jump-start, you may want to visit a mechanic to ensure there are no underlying issues with your motorcycle. If you’re located in Milwaukee or Madison, Wisconsin, we recommend visiting us here at Wisconsin Harley-Davidson®. Our expert maintenance staff here in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin will be happy to assist you with all of your motorcycle’s maintenance and repair needs!
